It fits no category, but has elements of so many that anyone with ears has a pretty good chance to like it. The talent of these musicians is undeniable. Many of the band members are known already from playing with other groups. Viscus started out about four years ago as a trio, including Micah Carbonneau, who was a member of nine different bands at once as recently as this summer. Mr. Carbonneau plays bass for Viscus, but also plays guitar and drums. A graduate of North Country Union High School, Mr. Carbonneau has managed to make his living with music lately, but will give up six of these other bands in order to participate in the tour with Viscus. “I did have a roofing and painting business for quite a while,” he said, but he decided to drop that in favor of chances to play music. He is still playing with a duo and with the New Gypsy Swing Quintet. Mr. Carbonneau said he knows that this work demands commitment, and he’s committed to Viscus. It was not hard to choose which band he wanted to concentrate on. “My heart soared every time I was with these guys. It felt like art,” he said. Ira Friedman, who grew up in Sutton, stopped working for the Old School Builders — at least for the winter — to go where Viscus might take him. Mr. Friedman plays keyboard and wrote most of the songs Viscus plays. Mr. Friedman has been writing songs ever since he was in high school. Sometimes he thinks of lyrics first, and other times the music comes first. “It happens every possible way really,” he said. “I just try to grab it when I get the chance.” He often carries a tape recorder. If it’s not handy he has been known to write on a napkin while driving down the road. Both Luke Laplant and Mr. Friedman have studied at William Paterson University in New Jersey. Hosted by John Heartson, the regional chapter co-ordinator for NSAI, the performance will feature the talents of local songwriters Eric Brinkerhoff, Michael Hahn, David Maguire, Don Sinclair with Jennifer Grossi and Steve Wright. The Songwriters Round performance format was made famous at the legendary Blue Bird Cafe in Nashville and has now become a popular means of showcasing works of songwriters all over the world The idea behind the Songwriters Round is simple: four performers sit on stage at the same time and take turns to play. The performer is encouraged to chat a little about his or her work before s/he performs each song. After the song ends, the next performer would follow, and so on. Thus, round and round it goes, as original songs are performed in an environment that is more reminiscent of a chatty living room than a concert stage. The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) consists of a body of creative minds, including songwriters from all genres of music, professional and amateur, who are committed to protecting the rights and future of the profession of songwriting, and to educate, elevate, and celebrate the songwriter and to act as a unifying force within the music community and the community at large. Eric Brinkerhoff (Mr. "E") Mr. E performs Bluesy Americana Songs in a unique finger picking style influenced by Guy Van Duser, Mississippi John Hurt, and the Beatles, with lyrics that transport you right into the song. Born in Oregon, raised in Idaho, he followed the music across the USA, moving from town to town, including Austin, New Orleans and even Brooklyn. Eric now lives in Danville Vermont and owns Melody Hill Farm. Michael Hahn - Michael plays a tasty blend of rock, country, blues and reggae spiced with the authentic maple flavoring of a third-generation Vermonter. Michael majored in Arranging and Composition at the Berklee School of Music, has performed for decades with popular dance bands, and is the author of five books and hundreds of magazine articles. David Maguire - David has been playing music for most of his life. He started performing when he was only eight, and later spent years playing the bar scene in New England and Florida. Tiring of that, he took a long break and came back determined to write and play his own songs. For the last eight years, he has split his time between his home in northeastern Vermont and Nashville. He plays occasionally throughout New England, and he can be seen in Nashville at such venues as the Bluebird Café. Just like his travels back and forth between New England and Tennessee, David? music travels the roads between contemporary folk and country, with the large part of acoustic singer/songwriter thrown into the mix. Artists from James Taylor to Jonathan Edwards, David Wilcox to Richard Shindell and Beth Nielson Chapman to Brad Paisley have all had their impact on his style. In the 1980’s Steve received national recognition, appearing with the group “Pickin’ Up Steam” on the Grand Ol’ Opry stage in Nashville, Tennessee. For the last fifteen years, he has been writing, performing, and recording with the acclaimed “Gopher Broke Bluegrass” band. His original material can be heard on their three CD’s. Just a teenager that escaped from the city and eloped with the country, Steph practiced up on her 12-string Harmony acoustic guitar and played her first open mike at Hunts in downtown Burlington, Vermont. Also at Hunts, the second open mike Steph played was standing room only. After that Steph recalls, "I'd come home after my day job, the phone would ring and it would be Hunts: 'Quick! Can you get down here? Jorma and Jack are late. We need you to play till they get here.'" Val Davis’ life has had its share of both. Music has always been his companion through it all.
